Tokyo Junkie: 60 Years of Bright Lights and Back Alleys . . . and Baseball Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Melanie Kirkpatrick -- A Home Run : Robert Whiting hits it out of the park again. In Tokyo Junkie, the author of the Chrysanthemum and the Bat and You Gotta Have Wa turns his wit and wisdom on his own life. The result is a captivating memoir that says as much about Tokyo's vibrant urban culture as it does about the audacious young gaijin who fell in love with the city in 1968 and never left. Mr. Whiting is a dazzling storyteller. Tokyo Junkie is an absolute delight. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from dokusha -- Interesting & Insightful! : Lots of great stories about Tokyo. A light, enjoyable read. Highly recommended! ( Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kevin B. Wheeler -- Fascinating insights into Japan : Whiting provides a candid, often humorous, and illuminating 50 year jaunt through Tokyo and Japan. His comments on historical events and characters are candid and I am sure raised some eyebrows. Well worth the read. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from jennisama -- Tokyo-rific. : What an education! Tokyo Junkie reads like a history book and has amazing wit, to boot. If you love Tokyo and Japan already, you'll love it even more after experiencing this book. Such a fun ride. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Buyer -- Great Read. : Fantastic! It brought back memories of my short 13-year stint in Tokyo. In my first 4 or so years, I was stationed in Yokosuka on two different 7th Flt. Flagships (The Providence and the Oklahoma City). After that, I returned to Tokyo as a student of Sophia University. Anyway, I really enjoyed the whole book. I thought it was well thought out and presented how you became enamored with the city, its people, and its interesting culture. I read two of your other books "The Christsabtemum and the Bat" and "Tokyo Underworld" and thoroughly enjoyed them. Thank you for presenting a very interesting memoir. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from R.L.D. -- His books are always interesting : The only reason I took off a star was the pace of the book. Often jumps all over the place and at Shinkansen speed. Still a good read. And nice summarizing at the end. (He came to Japan 12 years before me. And I'm still here, also. With Japanese wife and family) ( Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sam Shimin -- To learn about what it was like from the end of WW2 up to the present day in Japan! : My life and experiences in Japan coincide with Mr. Whiting. I came to Japan in 1968 and served in the military. After leaving the military I have spent most of my adult life here. I really enjoyed this stroll down memory lane and would recommend this memoir to anyone wanting to know what has transpired in this country from the early ‘60s up the present day.
